5 Small Habits That Keep You Consistent in Winter

Cold mornings make showing up hard. Here are five simple habits our personal trainers swear by. None of them involve a 5 a.m. alarm.

Getting started

Cold mornings and shorter days can make your usual workout routine harder to follow. Start by choosing a time that fits your life, whether that’s a midday break, an evening class at the Y or a weekend visit with a friend.

Keep your plans manageable. A routine that leaves room for busy days is easier to return to throughout the winter.

What to expect

These five small habits can help you make movement a regular part of your week:

  • Schedule your next visit. Choose a specific day and time instead of waiting for a free moment.
  • Get your bag ready. Pack your workout clothes, shoes and water bottle the night before.
  • Start with something you enjoy. Pick an activity or YMCA class you look forward to attending.
  • Find a familiar face. Arrange to meet a friend or build connections by attending the same class regularly.
  • Keep a backup plan. A shorter workout or indoor movement at home gives you options when plans change.

Putting it into practice

Choose one habit and try it this week. Put a YMCA visit on your calendar, leave your packed bag by the door or ask a friend to join you. Add another habit once the first starts feeling familiar.

Some weeks will go more smoothly than others. If you miss a workout, return at your next planned opportunity. Each visit is another chance to make time for yourself and connect with your community at the Y.
