Going alone works. Going together works better. Why showing up to the same class each week may be the most underrated habit in fitness.
Getting started
You don’t have to know the moves or keep up with everyone to join a group fitness class at the Y. Start by checking your local YMCA’s schedule for something that interests you, whether that’s strength training, dance, yoga or water fitness.
Choose a time that fits your week and arrive a few minutes early. Let the instructor know you’re new so they can help you get settled. Bring water, wear comfortable workout clothes and give yourself permission to learn as you go.
What to expect
A group class gives you a shared starting point: a time, a place and people to move alongside. You can enjoy the energy of the group while working at your own pace. On your first visit:
- Introduce yourself to the instructor and ask what equipment you’ll need.
- Ask about options for movements that feel unfamiliar.
- Take breaks whenever you need them.
- Focus on getting comfortable, rather than getting every move right.
Putting it into practice
Pick one class you can realistically attend each week and put it on your calendar. Give yourself a few visits to get familiar with the format. If it doesn’t feel like a good fit, try another class or instructor.
Over time, the room may feel less unfamiliar. You recognize a face, learn a name and find your favorite spot. That sense of connection is part of what makes a class at the Y worth returning to. It can also make showing up a little easier.
